Trump’s Financial Strategy Persuades China to Put Screws to North Korea

President Trump persuaded China to freeze all financial transactions with North Korea and ordered a new round of U.S. sanctions Thursday, closing out his first U.N. General Assembly with a major diplomatic victory in his efforts to curb Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and missile programs short of war. In a carefully choreographed strategy deployed from the shadow of the United Nations headquarters in New York, Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin called the head of China’s central bank very early Thursday to alert him that Mr. Trump was preparing an executive order to sanction any financial institutions doing business with North Korea. Philadelphia Finds Hundreds of Illegal Voters

Hundreds of noncitizens were registered to vote in Philadelphia over the last decade, and at least 90 of them actually ended up casting ballots that should never have been allowed, City Commissioner Al Schmidt said Wednesday, adding more fuel to complaints of bogus voting in U.S. elections. The voters are all self-admitted noncitizens who went back and canceled their registrations later — but not before casting illegal ballots a total of 227 times in elections in 2006 and 2007, Mr. Schmidt said. Household Wealth Rises $1.7 Trillion to Record

The wealth of U.S. households rose to $96.2 trillion in the second quarter of this year as U.S. stock prices hit record highs and home values continued to climb, a report by the Federal Reserve showed on Thursday. About three fourths of the $1.8 trillion increase benefited the top 10 percent of the population if trends estimated by the Congressional Budget Office are still valid. That compares to a slightly downwardly revised $94.5 trillion tally for household net worth in the previous quarter. Household borrowing rose at a 3.7 percent annual rate in the April-June period, the report also showed, up from a 3.4 percent growth rate in the first quarter. Consumer credit ... Read More

Trump's Approval Up to 40% on Hurricane Relief Efforts

President Donald Trump's approval rating has risen to 40 percent, as respondents to a new CNN poll released Thursday gave his administration high marks for its response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Sixty-four percent of the 1,053 adult respondents said they approved of how the White House responded to hurricanes that devastated portions of Texas, Florida and the Caribbean. The CNN poll was among several that gave President Trump high marks for his hurricane relief efforts, including a deal with Democrats earlier this month to raise the debt ceiling and to provide $15.25 billion in aid to Harvey victims. ... Read More
