MUTH'S TRUTHS 06/22/2017

For decades now, self-serving Nevada politicians have reflexively, Pavlov-like, belched opposition to Yucca Mountain and brow-beat anyone in the state who dared suggest we at least consider the potential benefits of storing the nation’s nuclear waste 90 long miles away from Las Vegas.

In a YUGE shift, now the state’s largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, has joined calls for an open discussion on this very serious issue with its lead editorial this morning…

“(F)or 30 years, it’s been politically expedient for Nevada politicians to rail against the proposal — with varying degrees of conviction, of course — and engage in all sorts of alarmism about everything Yucca. Yet even the most powerful member of Congress in the history of Nevada could succeed in only temporarily shelving the project.

“The question that Nevadans should now be asking their representatives is simple: What’s the back-up plan? Pounding fists on the table and yelling ‘no, no, no’ makes for wonderful TV soundbites. But what about the potential for the state and its residents to benefit financially from Yucca Mountain? Money for education and infrastructure development? Tax breaks?

“Why is it heresy to investigate what the federal government has to offer? Because if there is no back-up plan to reflexive opposition, there’s a chance that Nevadans will get screwed a second time.”

Exactly.

Do the math.  It’s 49 states vs. Nevada.  Even the Strip wouldn’t give odds on such a lopsided contest.  So isn’t it time for responsible elected officials to at least consider how Nevada might get some gold instead of just the shaft?

Cheers.

P.S.  Because I “cut the cord” almost three years ago, I don’t get FOX News. But with internet-based Sling TV I do get CNN.  So I cranked up the wi-fi and tuned in to the Fake News Channel to watch President Donald  Trump’sspeech in Iowa last night.

But CNN didn’t carry it.  Instead there was nothing but the usual Trump-bashing and reports on the latest “developments” over the so-called Russia collusion witch hunt while the president was speaking.

CNN is no longer a legitimate news organization.  The White House should rescind its media credentials.

NEVADA NEWS & VIEWS

2018 GOP Candidate Update/Corrections

I had the southern Nevada congressional districts mixed up in my Sundayreport.  The establishment anointing process is looking for State Sen. Scott Hammond to run for CD4, not CD3, and Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony to run for CD3, not CD4.

In fact, Hammond – who voted for the largest tax hike in Nevada history and botched multiple efforts to get Gov. Brian Sandoval to fund the ESA program – announced his run for CD4 yesterday.  Will be interesting to see if Hammond signs the Taxpayer Protection Pledge that he refused to sign in the Legislature.

And by the way, Hammond is mid-term so tax-hiking RINO Assembly Minority Leader Paul Anderson will not be running for his seat in 2018.  There are still rumors Anderson won’t run for re-election (we can only hope!).

Meanwhile, a wild card entered the picture in CD3 with reports that former Rep. Cresent Hardy might throw his hat in that ring with Anthony and Danny Tarkanian and former California Rep. Buck McKeon’s boy.

Assistant Treasurer Grant Hewitt has reportedly now decided not to run for Treasurer, however, former state assembly candidate Eugene Hoover of Reno is said to be looking at the race.

Another source tells me state Sen. Ben Kieckhefer is not planning on running for Reno mayor – but then again, Kieckhefer also said he was against tax hikes before voting for the largest tax hike in Nevada history and declared “No ESAs, No Budget” this year before voting for a budget with no ESAs.

And Assemblywoman Lisa Krasner confirms that she will NOT be running for state senate next year.

“It is an honor to represent the people of my district in their government,” she wrote me in an email.  “I worked as hard as I possibly could every day during the 2017 Legislative session and I hope that the people in my district will re-elect me to serve again next session.”

On the Democrats’ side, generally clueless Rep. Jackie Rosen (D-Derpa-Derpastan) – with all of five months’ worth of experience in politics – has announced she’s running for U.S. Senate against GOP Sen. Dean Heller.  Sorry, Congresswoman Titus.  Always a bridesmaid; never a bride.

And state Sen. Tick Segerblom – the Father of Pot in Nevada – will be running for the Clark County Commission in 2018 after Democrats seemingly successfully squeezed fellow Democrat state Sen. Mark Manendo out of the race with a sexual harassment investigation.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“The brand is just bad.  I don’t think people in the Beltway are realizing just how toxic the Democratic Party brand is in so many parts of the country.” – Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan after D’s lost special election in Georgia on Tuesday
